Mirjam, a Dutch biologist, has been working as a development agent for 12 years in the Portuguese Serra da Estrela Mountains. She created and managed a professional centre for sustainable development, where during 10 years she worked at regional, national and international level on topics related to organic agriculture, eco-tourism and environmental education. She represented the European Centre for Eco Agro Tourism in Portugal, editing the National Green Holiday Guide, and is one of the founders of the International Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture Training, IFSAT. In 2004 she decided to become independent and created her own company CAPAX Lda., which main activities consist of consultancy, training and projects related to sustainable initiatives in rural areas. Capax has been active so far in partnerships in EU-projects related to training and education in Sustainable Agriculture. In her beautifull mountain village Vila Soeiro, Mirjam created the Practical School for Herbalism Carpe Diem, which owns a huge medicinal plants garden and realises a vast range of courses related to the subject.

The Course.


This 5 day course in Herbalism is designed for people wishing to explore general aspects of growth, processing and use of medicinal and aromathic plants.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Determine a series of medicinal plants by botanic and phenomenological characteristics; be able to understand which plants belong tho their inner being;
Understand and apply basic aspects of the growth of medicinal plants; be able to establish a medicinal circle garden;
Choose appropriate conservation and packaging methods;
Prepare some basic medicinal products, i.e. ointments, syrupes, tinctures and oils.
Prepare some basic cosmetic products, i.e. body-lotions, cremes, tooth-pastes, shower-gels and shampoos;
Establish a natural first-aid-kit and be able to compose a range of medicinal tea-mixtures;
Understand medicinal properties of a series of plants and apply them in appropriate ways.

The Cost.

Price: €850 (£570 approx) per person fully inclusive of all tuition, materials, use of equipment, accommodation, meals, wine and beverages.

Accommodation: This price is based on six nights in shared rooms/apartments. If you wish to have your own room please add €120 (£80.)
Camping is also available. If you choose to camp the price for the course will be €750 (£500) per person. (fully inclusive of all meals.)

Terms of Payment: We ask you to pay 50% deposit on booking and the remainder at Monte Rosa on commencement of the course.

Methods of Payment: Euro/Sterling cheque, cash or credit/debit cards.

Discounts: For couples booking together we can offer a 5% discount. Groups of four + can receive a 10% discount.

Flights (European countries): You will need to fly to Lisbon or Porto.

Flights (Countries outside Europe) Generally you will fly to Lisbon and get a connecting flight or train to Porto but we can pick you up from Lisbon international airport if you wish.
